There is no right or wrong in Art

The lighthouse, in Maine. Circa 2009

I imagine it has been over fifteen years that I attended a 5 day long work-shop held given in Maine. This was my first formal workshop with regards to my photography and more than a bit anxious about it. Even after registering and paying upfront I still wasn’t sure I should attend. My anxiety was because I’m an old fart and following the age old adage of “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, as well as up until then only some friends and family have really ever seen my work. And now the whole world, this doesn’t sound like it’s for me.

After registering I read the syllabus and it brought my anxiety back. It showed that on the first day and this is what did it, a “public review of the portfolio.” The critique will be given during both afternoon and evening sessions: IN FRONT OF ALL IN ATTENDANCE. Every which was I turned it was in my face: REVIEWS, CRITIQUES, ETC. I tried relaxing, after all I’m an adult. I figured I just won’t do it. When asked, I’d fall back on the age old adage of “the dog ate my homework” We don’t even have a dog! That was good until Joyce asked if I would like her help to assemble my work for the review. I couldn’t say anything, she knows we have no dog.

Summer arrives as does day one of the workshop. I submit my portfolio and given a time slot to meet with the Pro for the critique, Ah, it’s private.

Returning for lunch after the morning assignment I handed in my flashcard along with my to be printed request; I think they were to print five images daily and then we would discuss them in class nightly. At lunch I tired to shy away from the many that knew what they were doing except that they decided to join me. Yes, this must be, PURGATORY, when all you want is solace and all they want is to share. It took a while before I felt comfortable enough with the group for me to share my work and thoughts. So this is what the workshop is all about; Learning though sharing.

Keep Pushing Forward

And end up further away… In an earlier time of my life, I hosted a WEB site. It took me days to install the software, and then days to get it to sync with the modem whenever someone would attempt logging on (Remember the shrill of the losing process). But once I got through it,…

A Little Sadder Now

Have you ever walked into the wall and then ask yourself, how could you not see it. I’m referring to a theroretic wall such as realizing Freud was right; it all stems from your childhood. I see the light now and now I know why I cry when Sean says, “Look at me, son. It’s…

It was simpler then

Or how I learned to live with AI Under the guise of World Wide Web confusion I offer this as an apology. I never meant to take so long to put up a web site; but it did. As well, I never intended on having a blog, and I do. Then all I wanted was…

It Goes Putt Putt

And then you fall over Waking up in Bermuda was nothing short of astonishing. Bermuda was warm, New York was cold. There were palm trees and green grass with deep blue skies, whereas NY was cold, wet with snow on the ground, and dark gray clouds. My list could go on and on, but I…

The Loneliness of the Crowd

Bermuda, where? After dong my stint for Uncle Sam, I return home to Mom and Brooklyn. I am welcomoed with open arms and Mom’s meatloaf (with hard boiled eggs in it) and the guys (sounds silly, “THE GUYS”) I may just be sensing a mental thing but I feel out of place living at home…

Max’s and More

Can there actually be more? No name dropping here, But Max’s was were it all took place, and “ALL” is what you may see, or feel that’s happening in your world. At this juncture MAX’S was a big part of ALL in my world. Simple desires; a good steak, baked potato with sour cream, a…

Then There Was Life

Welcome Kodak. Continuing along the chronologic order of my life with my camera comes, and should be no surprise to anyone, The Brownie Hawkeye.  How to begin and remain focused (no pun intended)on photography when my life was centered around my Grandmother’s, (affectionately Bubbie) LOVE and PROTECTION. Yes, protection I was protected from any and…
